When a White Dove Crosses Your Path

After a wonderful afternoon strolling Main Street St. Charles with hubby, Russell, and our two canine children, we made the trek home in our SUV on I-70.  Russell cast his eyes to the sky and a perfect white dove flew overhead.  The dove, immediately in our line of sight, crossed paths at the specific moment we were traveling down the highway.

Coincidence.  Maybe?  Or Maybe not.

This stirred up memories of a service at O’Fallon Christian Church many years ago.  I’d been searching for a church for several months – one my husband and I could attend together.  The service was uplifting with joyful music.  Listening to the song, “I Surrender”, the Holy Spirit filled me with an unexplained emotion and vulnerability.  I was baptized shortly after.

Over the last few days, a series of events happened – my husband lost his aunt due to a heart attack, it was suggested I get a biopsy for a recently diagnosed medical condition, and the stress of working on my book caught up with me.

After seeing the dove, I felt calmness throughout my body, and peace.  God was telling everything was going to be just fine.

Wikianswers gives this explanation:

“A white dove in your path is not by coincidence. Your awareness of its presence, calmness and beauty is also a gift. You were meant to see this dove to remind you to focus on the peace you have in your heart and that is always present all around you, and in your life.”

Wikipedia says,  “In Christian Iconography, a dove also symbolizes the Holy Spirit, in reference to Matthew 3:16 and Luke 3:22 where the Holy Spirit is compared to a dove at the Baptism of Jesus. The early Christians in Rome incorporated into their funerary art the image of a dove carrying an olive branch, often accompanied by the word “Peace”. It seems that they derived this image from the simile in the Gospels, combining it with the symbol of the olive branch, which had been used to represent peace by the Greeks and Romans. The dove and olive branch also appeared in Christian images of Noah’s ark…”

So no matter what the explanation, my thoughts turned to God at the sight of the dove, and that’s what’s important.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and all your soul.   Proverbs 3:5

  1. Sheree, that’s so beautiful and I too believe it flew by for a reason. For me it’s the cardinal. Whenever I am troubled I tend to see cardinals. One will fly in front of my car, or sit on my deck and once when I was really upset about something I looked out my front door and there was one sitting on my front porch. They have a calming effect on me.

  2. My Husband and I were heading to Church just now and a White Dove flew right Across Us as We Drove. Thus was Amazing!💖 I have alot on My Mind, heavy Things. I Read it was a Symbol of Our Lord! The White Dove was Beautiful 💖

  3. Dear Tammy, sorry it took so long for me to respond. We were on vacation. White doves are amazing aren’t they? God knows where we’re suppose to be, at any particular time. I hope your worries are lightened, my dear, just by the sight of a white dove. They make me feel peaceful.

  4. I have had Some Worries about a few Things going on in My Life. Then, Out of the Blue, a White Dove flew Right Over😊💖 Yes, I Do feel a Little Better on Some Things. I Thank The Lord it was a Wonderful Meaning 💖💖

  5. I was driving on the freeway today around noon, suddenly right in front of me and I mean my windshield not to close there appeared a pure as white dove, it seemed playful as i was going so fast it didn’t seem to distract me. I looked over to my passanger side window and there it was again. Happend so fast but yet so calmly and lasting in my mind throughout the day. I felt it meant something, so here I am looking this up. Thanks for your story. Im a single mother in the process of selling my home to move myself and my children to a new area, my oldest son has been so angry towards me for the last few years so this has not been easy but ive always been optimistic, so this dove made me feel at ease as if i felt love coming from a source of above. Thanks again.

    • Marie, yes, we are truly in God’s grace just exactly when we need it. Prayers for an easy transition on your move, and hopefully communication will improve with your son. God bless you and Merry Christmas.

  6. I’ve seen many doves, sometimes alone sometimes in a pair. Always when I’m driving though. They seem to fly overhead and cross right over me at the exact moment. Yesterday while driving a daring white dove flew into the freeway and was about 50 feet in front of me flying alongside a truck (we’re going 65-70 mph). I read they usually cannot fly at those speeds but this dove was keeping up for about 7 seconds until it made a majestic 90-deg takeoff right as I caught up to it. It was amazing, I was speechless and found myself having the biggest smile ever. I glanced over at the clock and it was exactly 4:44 PM. I’ve kept pondering what this could mean, but maybe it doesn’t need to mean anything complicated – maybe just a simple “hello, keep going, you’re doing great” was the message. The past 12 months have been filled with inner changes for me and I felt a sense of joy and peace that I know is within me everyday. I just have to remember that when. Thank you for your story, it inspired me to tell mine. 🙂 God bless.

    • Alex, I am sorry it took so long for me to respond. Since this was an older post, even though it seems to be the most popular one, I’m still getting comments, which makes me happy.

I hope you’re feeling rejuvenated every day just seeing that dove. I hope that your changes have turned into positive life experiences. Doves are a symbol of peace.

Here is a wonderful verse from the bible, Luke 3:22
“and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.”

  7. Thank you for your post. My husband was visited by a white Dove today. She sat on the window sill for more than one hour and even when he opened the window, she didn’t fly away. We are Muslims but your explanation was beautiful and helpful.

    • Adrienne, I hope your husband found comfort in her presence. I know if I’m struggling within, the sight of a white dove helps me feel calm. I’m glad you found this explanation helpful.

  8. I saw one today had a really tough night 😔 just matters of the heart and was crying out to God last night and this morning in a secluded place .

    • Sherry, I am really sorry you had a rough night. The day you posted this I was having surgery for a macular hole in left eye’s retina. So I have been away from my blog for awhile, as I have been unable to see well out of my left eye. It’s a long road to recovery, and not sure what my vision will be. It’s always okay to cry out to God. I talk to Him and I feel comforted.

      • Hi , Thank you for the encouraging words God bless you and your eyes .By his stripes we are healed in Jesus Mighty Name Amen ❤️ we have that promise from God .
